The India ASEAN Trade Council (IATC) is a non-governmental organization based in Bangalore, India, established with the purpose of promoting greater efficiency and coordination among Indian companies in ASEAN countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.[1][2][3][4]

History

The council was founded in June 2023, motivated by the desire to enhance the role of the private sector in international trade. The organization seeks to promote Indian businesses and educational initiatives across the ASEAN region through the 'Make in India' programs.[5]

Objectives

The India ASEAN Trade Council aims to:

  • Accelerate economic, social, and cultural development in the ASEAN region.
  • Improve the implementation of projects and activities by Indian companies in ASEAN countries.
  • Foster closer cooperation with existing international organizations within the ASEAN framework.
  • Promote the 'Make in India' initiative through various business engagements.[6][7]

Structure

Leadership

The council is headed by President Dr. Asif Iqbal. It also has regional trade commissioners who manage specific areas:

  • Maharashtra Region: Hon. Sachin Kate
  • Kerala Region: Hon. Varkey Peter
  • Telangana Region: Hon. Pabbathi Venkata Ravi Kumar
  • Education and Healthcare: Hon. Dr. Prakash

These commissioners are responsible for leading delegations to ASEAN countries to enhance trade and educational links.[8]
